Question Of The Week
"In the early s, my grandfather immigrated to the US from Italy and brought thick tree starts, rooted cuttings with him for his children.
In , my husband and I lost our home to the Joplin, Missouri tornado.
Steve bender overgrown plants photos A lot of figs produce both, early and late season crops. So if you're severely pruning it in the fall, like cutting it to the ground. That means you're absolutely getting rid of the first early crop, and doing so, could also jolt the plant into a fast growth mode in which it makes lots and lots of stems and leaves, and then only makes fruit very late and then it can fall victim to a freeze. When we moved into a new house in , my dad brought over a new start from his hand me down fig for me. He used to cut his fig tree to the ground every fall and let it regrow. So I've been doing that too. It's doing great and grows taller than the roof every year, but the fruit ripens very late and usually falls victim to the frost.
Is there something I should be doing differently?" -Patty
Grumpy's Response: Patty, I just want to say thanks for sending that in, 'cause that is a story that really resonates with me, 'cause I remember that tornado outbreak just like it was yesterday. I was in Arkansas at the time and I kept calling home to my family in Alabama and I'd hear sirens going off, and so I'm glad to hear that, even though it took your house.

So I would try not cutting it back so severely. And keep that pass along tradition going.
I love the story about how you got your fig and I like the way that it links your family and your generations together.
