Rigaud worked slowly, typically producing fewer than half-a-dozen pieces a year. Following a near-fatal automobile accident early in , his production declined further. Some of Benoit's later work was surrealistic, though he continued to produce narrative scenes of Haitian life until his death in By the time of his death, Rigaud had attained a measure of financial security, owning a comfortable cottage on the outskirts of the Haitian capital.
